Attorney Spotlight – Mark Guilfoyle

Name

Mark Guilfoyle

In which office are you located?

DBL Law’s Northern Kentucky office in Covington, Kentucky.

Tell us a little about your practice.

I chair the firm’s Government Advocacy and Economic Development group, helping clients navigate government bureaucracies in Kentucky state government and locally. This might involve representing a business before state regulators or helping a developer win a zoning approval or helping a company who wants to relocate to Kentucky win economic development incentives.

What led you to a legal career?

I studied Latin and Greek at Xavier University — it was either be a teacher or be a lawyer. I like to win things, so law was the ticket.

What has been your most interesting or memorable case and why?

Defending a Kentucky law that required women to wait 24 hours before having an abortion after being given facts about fetal development. We tried the case to a federal judge in Louisville and won. The law trusted women to evaluate the risks of abortion and to give their informed consent. I think that law has positively affected countless women in Kentucky.

What’s something about you most people don’t know?

I am writing a novel. Going very slow. Not sure if it will be a bestseller, but my wife and kids will tell me they love it.

Where would we find you on the weekend?

Lunch on Saturday with the Queen City Optimists, an FC Cincinnati game or play or concert on Saturday night, Mass on Sunday, and family dinner on Sunday night. In the office typically, as well, I hate to say.

If you had one piece of advice to give an attorney just starting out, what would it be

Practice law like Pete Rose. Outwork your opponent if try cases, over-prepare in all you do and get out of your office to meet people. Good lawyers hustle — in the best sense of the word.
